REVERSE SHOT (FOR HIM)
24 second HD video loop. 2009
During this quick loop, two French words appear: ALORS / DEHORS – which can be translated as SO / GET OUT - SO? / LEAVE – THEN / OUTSIDE or any combination of those words. The gestures suggest the words as much as the words might define the gestures, simultaneously inviting and rejecting the viewer. The sequence of gestures is set to music that I never reveal. The spectator is left in the dark, to imagine what it could be. A soundtrack would make the gesture an illustration of the music and I wanted the mood to be more ambiguous – like the words. The focus had to be entirely visual. I was thinking about how music colors one's perception of an experience – especially via the walkman/cd player/mp3 player. The lighting and the use of text both refer to the new wave film A Womas is a Woman by Jean-Luc Godard, which explores tensions and power struggles in a romantic relationship.
