A.R.R.G.H. Artists for Research, Reconnaissance and General Hijinks 42º 16' 52.00" N 70º 53' 15.4" W a 5 day performance with Courtney Lockemer This project happened as part of the Bumpkin Island Art Encampment of 2009, organized by The Berwick Research Institute. As A.R.R.G.H., we designed our project to place us on the fringes of a temporary society. We sought to violate the conventions regarding intellectual property of a contemporary artistic community as well those in society more generally by making work that was "stolen" in one way or another. We fed on the products of the other artists on the island, humorously parasitic, and made our own imitations of them. In order to carry out our piracy in relative secrecy we largely secluded ourselves from the "legitimate" mini-society of the island. We refused to locate ourselves and our work on the official maps created to guide visitors through the projects on the island and communicated with the curators via daily broadcasts on WARG rather than meet with them in person. The isolation from others enhanced the sense of mystery and paranoia the other artists felt toward us. Visitors did not know for certain what work was ours, and a pirate mythology began to emerge. However, total isolation was neither possible nor necessary, as social contact with others on the island did not interfere with our pirating activities. Our work ultimately existed as part of the environment and community we shared.
